I’m a freelancer entrepreneur in Los Angeles with no health insurance coverage! And I am constantly in search of affordable health care! Being overwhelmed by the scope of information, and misinformation, out there about health insurance, I was thrilled to come across the blog toddshealthinsurance.com.This blog is a must read for anyone looking for health-related (and health insurance-related) information made simple. Though there’s no cure for Swine Flu, the H1N1 Vaccine, available now, reduces the risk of infection. Trials supervised by the National Institutes of Health found that a single dose of the H1N1 vaccine is enough to grant immunity in adults in only three weeks.
According to the Los Angeles Times, California has 2,700 hospitalizations and 206 deaths from H1N1. However, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says, “the 2009 H1N1 viruses cause generally mild disease but also spread between individuals relatively effectively.” Although more people may become ill from Swine Flu, fewer will die from it than from regular, seasonal flu.
I live in Los Angeles, CA and have been unemployed and without health insurance since May 2009. As a result, I scour the Internet almost daily looking for news about health care reform. To my relief, I recently found a website designed to specifically help who live in Southern California, Los Angeles Region: toddshealthinsurance.com.
The bill gives tax credits to low- and middle-class individuals and families to help offset the expense of purchasing health insurance. It also expands Medicaid. Its greatest strength, however, lies in its design to restructure the privatized insurance system, which currently allows for insurance companies to deny coverage for, or based on, pre-existing conditions, raise rates arbitrarily, and cancel policies altogether when injury or disease prove to be costly to treat.
One of the bills weaknesses is the requirement that employers who don’t, or can’t, offer a health insurance package to employees cover the additional costs for the government-subsidized coverage employees may qualify for. Another weakness, according to Ryan Grim at the Huffington Post: “The package, coming in at under $900 billion over 10 years, is the least generous in terms of subsidies for working- and middle-class Americans to purchase health insurance, and it does not include a national public health insurance option.”
